PLAY-BASED LEARNING

Play is a child's work.  Children learn about their world, the people in their world, and themselves through play. Providing an environment that is rich with diverse materials and opportunities to explore these materials lays the groundwork for children's learning.

As a teacher or home visitor, you play an important role in facilitating the learning experiences by setting up the materials in interesting ways, promoting critical thinking, and expanding the play.

Strategies to Encourage Play

  1. Combine different types of materials. Example: Add plastic bugs and tongs to block area.
  2. Prepare questions in advance for activity such as " Can you tell me why you think that?" or "What could we do next?" to expand activity.
  3. Have FUN! Children love to share an experience with someone who is enjoying the activity and spending time with them.  Find ways to share in the joy!
